Woman fumes as 'young sex workers' invade neighbourhood 'and make oral sex gestures'

A furious woman has blasted the sex workers in her area who she claims have destroyed the ambience by making repeated lewd and sexual gestures to potential clients.

Shamina, from Huddersfield, has submitted a formal complaint to Kirklees Council about the alleged behaviour of sex workers in Birkby.

She claims they have congregated outside European Mini Market in Blacker Road which in May earlier this year was granted permission by the council to sell off-premises alcohol from 6am to 10pm.

This move came in spite of some local councillors' fears that granting this would exacerbate existing antisocial behaviour reports YorkshireLive.

A worker at European Mini Market said it had not been made aware of any complaints made by neighbours and said the shop wanted to work with the community and "try and be a good neighbour".

Shamina said: "Frankly, the opening of this shop has been nothing short of a nightmare for the residents of Arnold Street. To begin with, there are intimidating large groups of males congregating outside the shop and on the bench affixed to the large tree directly across the road from the shop.

"The males can be heard right through to the early hours of the morning shouting, smashing alcohol bottles and playing music which can be heard by us residents. In addition to the above, there have been pools of vomit outside a house on Arnold Street. And on Sufton Street there are discarded broken glass shards from the alcohol bottles consumed by customers of the shop.

"In addition to this, some of the men have dogs and there are huge mounds of dog fouling along the pavements surrounding the shop. Children attending the local mosque for evening classes are being harassed for change by those loitering outside the shop which is undoubtedly distressing to children as young as 10 being approached by groups of men with dogs.

"Alarmingly, there are extremely young-looking females soliciting clients for sexual purposes. They are scantily dressed and shout lewd comments making gestures regarding oral sex. I myself have witnessed this when I have returned from the cinema at 11.30pm a few nights ago.

"Frankly, the shop owner's reassurance of installing CCTV is insufficient to address the issues concerned. Myself and residents have contacted the police only to be told that these matters are within the council's remit. A local Police Community Support Officer has stated that the council's decision to grant a licence to this shop is only adding to the strain on police resources allocated to the area.

"Understandably, they have prioritised drug dealing and firearms offences in the area and your decision to grant a licence to this premises is disgraceful in light of this.

"Kindly liaise with the shop owner to resolve these issues failing which I will be seeking a judicial review of your decision to grant the licence to this property; for once, you must put the welfare of Birkby's citizens ahead of financial interests."
