Emily Blunt was forced to turn down Marvel’s role of Black Widow over a strict rule of her contract while filming Gulliver’s Travels. The Golden Globe recipient shared her thoughts on the lost opportunity and what she thought of Scarlett Johansson’s casting.

The Black Widow character was meant to be played by Emily Blunt but the role eventually went to Scarlett Johannson due to contract commitments of the British star. Emily has opened up about missing out on the opportunity to land a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Emily Blunt turned down Black Widow role over contract rule

The Oppenheimer star, 40, was unable to accept to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2 because of her contract to film the 2010 movie Gulliver’s Travels.

“I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels,” The British actress told Howard Stern in a previous interview.

“It was a bit of a heartbreaker for me,” she continued. “I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films that I do.”

Oppenheimer star speaks on Scarlett Johansson’s casting

While a number of fans may feel sad about the British star’s missed opportunity, Emily is more than thrilled that the role went to Scarlett.

“Come on, the best girl got it,” she recently said on the Happy Sad podcast and added that Scarlett was “amazing” in portraying Natasha Romanoff.

The Girl on the Train actress was rumored to play other roles in the Marvel film series, including Peggy Carter and Captain Marvel. The former went to Mission Impossible star Hayley Atwell and the latter to Brie Larson.

In the same podcast interview, Emily brushed off the long-time speculations in Hollywood and added: “Rumors. Talk. Queries. That kind of thing.”

Emily’s iconic movie roles

The British star, who is married to American actor John Krasinski, has landed a number of iconic roles in her career. She played assistant Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and Princess Mary in Gulliver’s Travels.

Some of her most recent movies include Mary Poppins Returns (2018), A Quiet Place Part II (2020), and Jungle Cruise (2021). She portrays Robert Oppenheimer’s wife Kitty Puenin in her latest project, the 2023 film Oppenheimer.
